Dartfordians headed to Canterbury for a winner takes all Regional 2 South East relegation play off.....

Match Report: Canterbury 2nd XV vs Dartfordians RFC 1st XV

Dartfordians headed to Canterbury for a winner takes all Regional 2 South East relegation play off, with their place in the league hanging in the balance.

It was Dartfordians who struck first, crossing inside the opening few minutes through Louis Chapman, who scored the only Darts try of the first half to settle any early nerves and take a deserved lead. With Jarlath Hetherington sidelined from kicking duties due to a knee injury, Tom Gubby stepped up confidently, adding crucial points from the tee to keep the scoreboard moving. Dartfordians carried real intent early on, applying pressure at the set piece, particularly in the scrum, where they won multiple penalties, and competing strongly at the lineout to disrupt Canterbury’s rhythm.

Canterbury opted for points midway through the half after a penalty inside 40 metres, but despite Dartfordians’ control in key areas, the hosts managed to swing momentum just before the break, finishing a move in the corner against the run of play.

Half time: 10 to 7

The second half couldn’t have started worse for Dartfordians, with Canterbury regathering from the kick off and launching a direct attack that saw them break through the defensive line to score. The conversion was missed, but the hosts extended their lead to 15 to 7.

From there, however, Dartfordians showed real character.

The response came through Jack Hooban, who powered over from a well worked maul to close the gap. Sustained pressure then saw Dartfordians stretch Canterbury out wide, with Tom Gubby finishing well on the left to edge the visitors ahead.

With Canterbury reduced by two yellow cards and further disrupted by front row injuries, leading to uncontested scrums, the momentum firmly swung Dartfordians’ way.
The decisive score came in style. Spotting space out wide, Jarlath Hetherington fired a superb, looping pass over the defensive line into the hands of Dempsey Chappell who, true to form, ducked and dived his way through the scrambling defence to touch down 15 metres left of the posts, extending the lead to 15 to 22.

But the drama wasn’t over.

In the closing stages, Canterbury broke through once more to score, narrowing the gap to 20 to 22 after a missed conversion. What followed was a tense, relentless final passage of play, with Canterbury awarded a series of penalties and throwing everything at the Dartfordians line.

The defence, however, held firm.

Phase after phase, tackle after tackle, Dartfordians produced a heroic final stand, showing composure, resilience, and sheer determination, until the referee finally brought the game to a close.

Full time score: 20 to 22

Tries: L Chapman, J Hooban, T Gubby, D Chappell
Conversions: T Gubby

A huge result under pressure, and one that secures Dartfordians’ place in Regional 2 South East for next season.
