Darts visited Westcombe Pk

Darts visited Westcombe Pk to face a team put together with players from the hosts, Beckenham, Alleynians and Beccehamians knowing this would be a tough test. With a number of changes to the team due to injuries and exam pressures Darts had to make some positional changes but started the match in good form keeping good control of the ball in the set piece as well at ruck time. The first 10 minutes was played entirely in the home team half but it was good defensive work which stopped a score. The front row of Lara, Rebecca and Jess were working really were backed up by Pip and Georgia all of whom were strong at the breakdown and using the pods really well. There were some great runs from Emily and Karis both back from injury. The backs were not given a great deal of room by the opposition backs who were well organised and tackled strongly. It looked like a score would come but then a breakaway from the home saw them move up the field and their powerful runners created the first score against the run of play. The new half back pairing of Ellie and Abbie was functioning well despite not having had time to train together and both Lizzie and Emily putting in some great tackles. Darts were still looking good and continuing to put on the pressure and Anna was well tackled close to the line. The home side were also looking more dangerous and Lillie put in one of her trademark tackles. Another good chance for Darts when Melissa caught a clearing kick and set the ball up well but again the defence held up. Eventually it was Lizzie who when Darts turned the ball over made a break and ran 40 metres to score under the posts. 5-5. The home side were using their big runners well and offloading the ball and this resulted in a score under the posts from a number of phases which started on the half way line. 12-5.
Unfortunately Melissa had to leave the field with a continuance of her hip injury and Darts also made a number of other changes with Libby and Lizzie G coming onto the wings and Evie moving to full back and in the forwards Cecilia, also back from injury and Talie went into the back row for their first games away from the back line and both equipped themselves extremely well. Darts were under a little more pressure in the second half as the more experienced home side were getting into a better flow and this resulted in two more tries. Darts continued to work really hard and some great runs by Abbie both Emilys and Karis nearly resulted in another score from Darts but again it was determined defence that kept us out. Good tackles by Evie and an all round great display from Pip highlighted the great team spirit the girls have and they never gave up working hard right to the end which came slightly early when Lizzie G was injured following a great tackle which hopefully is nothing more than a sprain.
A great effort from our young side who are improving with every match and showing they have great ability spirit and potential to move onto to better things in the game. Player of the match was awarded to Pip who was impressive throughout.
