Darts began with real purpose, combining speed and power at the breakdown with strong defensive organisation. An impressive opening half saw the girls take their opportunities well and build a 24–0 lead at half-time.
The strong start continued after the break as Darts extended their advantage, before Medway responded with a determined spell of their own. The visitors applied sustained pressure and Darts were called upon to show real character, including some excellent defending on their own try line.
There was plenty to admire in the way the squad responded. The girls showed real adaptability, moving between positions when required, while maintaining their shape and continuing to work for one another. Against a physical Medway side, the commitment across the team was outstanding.
After weathering Medway’s comeback, Darts finished strongly. Some clinical back play produced two superb length-of-the-field tries late in the game, a fitting end to an excellent all-round team performance.
The final 45–17 scoreline capped a very positive first league outing, with the performance characterised by defensive commitment, physicality, adaptability and some exciting attacking rugby.
Lilly-May O was named Medway’s Forward of the Match, Gaby their Back of the Match, while Freya was selected as the Dartfordians coaches’ Player of the Match.
A very good start, plenty to build on and, most importantly, a performance that showed the strength and versatility developing throughout this squad.
