In front of a record-breaking crowd of over 250 supporters, Dartfordians U16 Girls delivered a thrilling, nerve-shredding comeback to defeat Welwyn 26-19 and secure their place in the National Cup Semi-Finals!
The Story of the Game
The match started with Welwyn taking control early, capitalising on Dartfordians' errors to race into a 0-14 lead. It was unfamiliar territory for a team that had never trailed by this margin before. But if there’s one thing this Dartfordians squad has in abundance, it’s heart, resilience, and sheer determination.
The fightback began with a powerful forward drive, allowing Martha to crash over just before halftime, converted by Anna to bring it to 7-14. However, Welwyn responded in the second half, stretching their lead to 7-19, leaving Dartfordians with a mountain to climb.
And climb it they did. With the home crowd roaring them on, Caitlin powered through for a crucial try, followed by a stunning conversion from Anna to make it 14-19. Momentum was shifting, and when Miley raced into the corner, the place erupted—19-19 with just 5 minutes left on the clock.
Then, with two minutes to go, Martha sent a looping pass out wide to Miley, who sprinted down the left wing under immense pressure to score the decisive try. The crowd went wild. The comeback was complete.
Post-Match Scenes
As the final whistle blew, jubilation and relief spread across players, coaches, and supporters alike. Welwyn, gracious in defeat, had pushed Dartfordians to their limits, but this squad had once again proven their mettle under pressure.
With the National Cup Semi-Finals now in sight, Dartfordians march on—battle-tested, fearless, and ready for the next challenge.
