A friendly game played in good spirit

A pleasant afternoon at the St Mary's pitch saw the U15s girls take on Medway/Aylesford. The wind was blowing along the river towards the A2 and Darts played in that direction and made use of the elements. Darts starters were Holly full back, Izzy and Livvy on the wings, Jannah and Blessing were centres, captain Ewa at fly half and debutant at scrum half Kyra .

The forwards were a familiar front row, Phoebe, Tierney and Emily, the boiler-house was Aimee and Jamima, flanking the scrum were Maddy and birthday girl Shauna, Lizzy F at 8.

Darts took a scrum 5 metres short of the Medway line, Lizzy picked up from the back, went open and was held just short. In the ensuing mele, Darts clung to possession and Aimee went over beneath the posts for a try. 5-0

At the re-start Jannah took the ball up the centre of the pitch but the ball was eventually turned over. The lineout was lost but the girls fought hard to turn it back over. After several phases of play the Darts girls were on the march again, the ball was taken forward by Aimee and then out to Jannah who showed her class and went over in the far right corner. 10-0

There was a change in the mind set, the girls were put under the cosh by the visitors and after several phases of play, Medway were awarded a penalty near the Darts line and caught the defence napping when the visitors tapped the ball and slid in from a matter of metres. picked up from the back of the scrum and their player glided through the Darts defence to dot down under the posts, with the conversion the score was 10-7.

Medway continued to pressure and at a scrum on the half way got quick ball, took their chance and found the gaps through and under the posts for their second try of the match, the conversion taken and the score was 10-14 to the visitors.

During the second half there was more of the same, both teams going at it hard and providing an entertaining game for the spectators. The finishers came on, Adele and Heather took over at wing, Demi came on the for injured Phoebe at tight head, Brooke slotted into the centres to give Jannah a well earned breather and Deni was on at flanker for Maddy.

What was most pleasing for the coaches was the attitude of the players, Adele put her demons to rest with some great tackles, Deni agreed to have a go at flanker and gave it a good go. Kyra at scrum half was a revelation, she kept up with play and acquitted herself admirably.

Medway scored a few more and stretched their lead to 26-10 which was the final score. Darts did string some phases together but some great close play could not penetrate the defence, what was most pleasing for the coaches was the attitude of the girls, never gave up and played to the end. It was great that so many had a chance to play, over 20 players in the Darts squad. It is also fair to say that the game was played in good spirit, Medway were a credit to their club and we look forward to meeting them again.

Aimee won the player of the match for the home team after another outstanding performance.

Well done all girls who played.
