It is with immense sadness that Dartfordians RFC shares the news that Dave Phillips passed away this morning, following his courageous battle with cancer. He left us peacefully, surrounded by his family.
It is difficult to capture in words the life of a true legend—someone who filled the lives of all who knew him with positivity, enthusiasm, and unwavering values. Dave’s relentless drive and appetite for hard work shaped a successful career in the City, and that same commitment carried through to every aspect of his involvement in rugby, both on and off the field.
For over 50 years, Dave was at the heart of Dartfordians RFC. He played for and captained the 1st XV, served as Chairman, Director of Rugby, Head Groundsman and coached players across seniors, juniors, and minis, both at the Club and in local schools. His pride in the Club was unmistakable, and he worked tirelessly to uphold and spread the honourable reputation of Dartfordians RFC, enriching the lives of all those he played with and coached.
Dave’s business career took him abroad, giving him the opportunity to continue playing rugby and expanding his already wide network of friends. His company was infectious—people gravitated to him. A great card player and an Easter Tour stalwart, Dave embodied the perfect balance of working hard and playing hard. He was, quite simply, fantastic to be around.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Gina, Dan, Sam, Jack, Natalie, the grandchildren, and the rest of Dave’s family.
Dave, you were a true gentleman, a rugby man, and a legend. Thank you for everything—from all at Dartfordians.
Funeral arrangements will be shared once known.
R.I.P. David McLean Phillips.
