It is with great sadness that the club has heard of the loss of our elder statesman.

It is with great sadness that the club has heard of the loss of our elder
statesman.

Arthur Jones passed away, at the age of 95, on Thursday 30th May at 11.30pm, after a short time in hospital.

Arthur’s presence will be missed by so many as he was involved in so many areas.

After leaving DGS in the early forties, he spent the last three years of WW2 in the Royal Engineers, mainly in India and Burma and invariably had a story to tell.

He then worked briefly for Martins Bank, before taking up teaching,
specialising in Physics and Maths. After a number of years at Dartford West School he taught at DGS.

He was an outstanding rugby player, turning out for the OD’s, moving on to Blackheath 1st XV and then returning to Bourne Road to encourage the junior sides.

His voice from the touchline will long be remembered by all those lucky enough to be coached by him.

He was for a number of years a Governor of DGS and will also be remembered for his eulogies at each Memorial Day ceremony.

Each year generations of students have listened, in awe, as Arthur, following
extensive research , described the short life of one of those former pupils who had lost their life in either WW1 or WW2. He carried this out until November last year.

The last few years of Arthur’s life have been dedicated to the care of his dear wife, Margaret.

We offer our sincerest condolences to Margaret, together with Tom, Helen,
their older brother, and all the family.

The funeral is to be held at St Paulinus Crayford on 5th July although a time has yet to be confirmed. A Wake will be at the Holiday Inn adjacent to the club.

R.I.P Arthur.
